Rain Days

When we learned that we would be in Ghana during the "rainy season", we were unsure what that meant. Would it be rainy all the time? How many sunny days would we experience? How "rainy" can it really be so close to the equator?

In Canada we have Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. We soon learned that in Ghana it's either the "rainy season" or the "dry season". The rainy season tends to be cooler than the dry season. Also, it's called the rainy season simply because it rains more frequently than during the dry season.

We have experienced only two full days of rain over a course of three weeks and some intermittent showers. The rain falls straight and steady, without the intense winds that Ontarians often endure.

"Rain Days"
In Ghana, children look forward to the days that it rains a lot because, similar to Canadian "snow days", it typically means that they won't attend school. We were interested to learn that like the children, adults also are often unable to commute to work on rain days. Those who do arrive are may be sent home to avoid complications from flooding. Local drainage systems often do not have the capacity to manage heavy rainfall.

The following are some photos from our first "rain day" in Ghana:

Luckily we were still able to find somewhere to go for a beer!
